Let’s look at the reaction to the appearance of HIV/AIDS in the USA: By 1983 we knew about the spread of the disease through various channels, for example blood transfusions. So, how many people need to die, before we listen to those facts? The answer, 5000. At least 5000 people died in the 3 years that it took to start implementing the scientific recommendations experts had called for. The Science was clear, but experts were just not getting through.

Chances are you either hate Clinton or Trump. You probably can’t understand how can anyone justify supporting “the other side”. Every day you see a new fact or news update that confirms how logical your decision is and how crazy the other side is. Well, you might be right, but you are probably also being played nonetheless.

I felt the same, I could not understand how so many people are so blind with so much mounting evidence. But I also had this skeptical tinkering attitude to try this experiment: I went to Facebook and “liked” and clicked every single page or article of opposing view I could find. For me, and to keep it simple, it meant basically lots of pro-Trump. The more opposed I would feel, the better. Thankfully Facebook, on its hunger to know you better, suggests related pages every time you like or click one. Not 10 minutes later my “About” page looked like this…

Last year, we spoke at Davos about Big Data. We were excited to explore the challenges and opportunities; especially in regards to the 2030 roadmap for the Global Goals (Sustainable Development Goals). So, a year on, has big data caught on?

In 2015 we kick-started the Global Goals, with a special emphasis on data. The main development organizations came together, and the goals and targets were approved. Stakeholders collaborated and shared their experiences. Excitingly, big data remained a central component of these conversations. The data4sdgs.org partnership was announced, of which the World Bank Group is an anchor partner and, we have committed US$ 20M for an innovation fund. This partnership will work to ensure big data analytical approaches are not just being used to increase the efficacy of development programs, but that we are using these approaches to monitor and ensure that programs are effective and truly reach those living in extreme poverty.

In the classical DIK view of Data, then Information, and then Knowledge; we are still missing the third layer. Just over five decades ago humans sent the first artificial satellite into space — Sputnik. At the time the World Bank was barely 10 years old and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) was just created. But, space has quickly grown to be a critical asset for our society, and increasingly indispensable for development. For instance, last week IFC announced an investment in a micro satellite company — Planet Labs, and at our event on Big Data for a More Resilient Future this week we displayed one so audience members could understand how small, agile, and mobile these machines have become since the days of Sputnik. Space’s role in society and development is the main narrative of the report that was just released by the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Space.

Last week I was invited to speak at the Annual Conference of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

There were more than 2800 official attendees, convening 1,500 business leaders from more than 100 countries, around 40 heads of state and 300 members of government and international institutions, 14 Nobel Laureates and 800 participants from academia, NGOs and civil society. An overwhelming number of people for a data geek like me, but the potential to maximize stakeholder engagement and forward looking conversations. With more than 300 sessions, it was a perfect landing space to grow and test the network we need for my new role as a data scientist at the World Bank Group’s Innovation Labs.

I demoed Google Glass to the Spanish president, Mariano Rajoy. It was a funny anecdote, and this is how it happened.

In January my President Mariano Rajoy came to meet Obama, and also held a reception at the Ambassador’s residence. I was invited. I had Glass, and I decided to bring them to the event, not wearing them, but in their pouch.

Right after entering I asked someone to take a picture of us, we started talking and it turned out that the person was the Head of Intelligence of the President’s cabinet, Alfonso de Senillosa. We started talking about technology and I mentioned the Google Glass I had on its pouch. He was very keen to try them so I took them out. He enjoyed trying them and I told him I would be honored to demo the Glass to the president if he wanted. At the same time virtually everyone around us also wanted to try them so I spent the next 30 minutes demoing and talking about the Glass with all the invitees and all the national and international media gathered around.

Today is my last day at GAIN. Almost 3 years dedicated to bringing a pragmatic view of the challenges of climate change adaptation. It has been a wild ride. I’m very proud of the work we’ve done and very thankful to everyone I’ve worked with. I’ve truly learned a lot, professionally and personally.

GAIN continues as NG-GAIN, now housed inside the University of Notre Dame. In fact I’ve spent the last 6 months dedicated to ensuring the transition is as smooth as possible. I will remain a very close friend and supporter, but now it’s time for me to move on to the next chapter on this journey. I’ve dedicated the last decade to broadening the impact of science. GAIN has been an important step, but I am thrilled to step up on that commitment.

-Last week it was announced that The 2013 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation has gone to the Max Planck Society. The Asturias newspaper “El comercio” asked me to tell their readers how is it to make a PhD at the Max Planck. This is what I sent. -

Todavía me quedaban ocho asignaturas de la carrera de Física, cuando en febrero solicité mi beca de doctorado al Max Planck. Mi profesor de Física Estelar II me lo recomendó. Yo acababa de llegar de Oviedo a La Laguna para terminar la carrera con la especialidad de Astrofísica y me pareció una locura. Los pocos compañeros a los que se lo dije me dijeron que me olvidase. Imposible. No me lo podía creer cuando en junio me invitaron a ir a dar una charla al comité de selección para la última fase. Nunca me olvidaré de que al acabar la misma todos los asistentes, investigadores de alto rango, se pusieron a dar golpes en las mesas, como llamando a la puerta. Luego supe que esa es la forma de aplaudir en academia en Alemania. Sólo aceptarían a nueve de los veinte candidatos, de entre los más de 500 que se habían presentado. Todos tenían excepcionales cualidades.

My Impact Journey to rural Myanmar

- During my recent trip to Myanmar (or Burma, or Birmania) we had the chance to visit a rural village. This was part of the World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders meeting. This is a little report about the experience.-

Kungyangon Township is roughly 3 hours southwest of Yangon. I write “roughly” because the drivers of our 4 SUV parade, with police, lost their way. Not much to blame since some of the roads, bridges or even the village itself are not on the map. Oddly enough I could still spot the missed turn with my GPS and the data I had downloaded on the hotel Wifi. We also had, as I was told by our local translator, a group of 30 police that the government sent to “protect us”. Problem is they sent it to another village with a similar name, so we never saw them.

This is the little story of how Foursquare and Twitter led to a VIP visit to Space X, the rocket factory, back in 2010.

I was at a conference in Irvine, CA. This is when I worked as a fellow of the Space Studies Board of the National Academies. The sessions were great but I had no plans the evening of the first day. After I was done with work I went to the bar for a quick bite. It occurred to me that maybe they had a Foursquare deal, so I used my mobile to check in. Indeed they had a free appetizer if you ordered a beer. Cool.

Walking the talk in climate change

This is what I was thinking as I left the NAS/NASA workshop Walking the talk: Climate Science in Service to Resilient Federal Properties.

This workshop, incidentally, was canceled a few hours short of its original date, October 31st, due to Sandy. On the second attempt, it was again almost cancelled, due to exceptional wind and rain conditions in DC. That pretty much summarizes my take-away from the meeting.

Upgrading the World Data Bank

The Open Data Catalog at the World Bank is a fantastic resource. I’ve used it many, many times. Especially while developing the GAIN Index. I’m sure I’ve spent hours on that domain. It’s astonishing the amount of information they’ve gathered in a consistent way.

Our GAIN Index indeed uses, and references, roughly 80% of its components directly back to the Catalog. Proudly, but oddly, a number of people have told me that they use our page instead of the Bank’s to get a glimpse of the data for a particular country. As humbling as that is, it’s odd that our page gets visits to see the components, not the aggregation we do for our purposes. It’s like buying a book for the Bibliography.

2nd Marathon

Neil deGrasse Tyson is, to my taste, one of the greatest outreach scientist of our time. Not long ago, the Templeton Fundation asked leading scientist and scholars “Does the Universe have a purpose?”. His answer is the one I like the most.

Anyone who expresses a more definitive response to the question is claiming access to knowledge not based on empirical foundations. This remarkably persistent way of thinking, common to most religions and some branches of philosophy, has failed badly in past efforts to understand, and thereby predict the operations of the universe and our place within it.

Running a marathon

Last week I ran the 2012 Marine Corps Marathon. It was my first marathon, I did it as vegan, and it was a great experience. Finish time was 3h54m17s, much better than I expected. To get to that point I trained hard, I focused on my diet and my stride, I read papers on strategies, and I geeked with the data. I want to talk about all that.

Climate is what we deserve

Climate change is what we deserve were the exact words I heard from an otherwise well educated and reasonable scientist. The logic was something like:

Climate has changed in the past. Yes there might be a significant change
lately but so has happened millennia ago, for natural reasons, like
volcanoes and other stuff. If you look at the long term climate, it's
full of variations. *Climate changes*

Therefore this change, that is doubtfully due to humans, is not really
worrisome. Climate changes and we have to deal with it. And if we are
the cause of it, more so. Why fight against the consequences we deserve?
We are too many, we harm the environment too much. If we indeed are the cause and we
disappear due to climate change, it's the natural thing. Like if we were a virus
and Earth needs to heal.  The earth will come back into its equilibrium afterwards.

This logic comes from a highly educated person, doing basic research science. And the fact is this is not the first time I hear a similar catastrophic argument of cosmic justice. On this particular case, few others around the table agreed on it.

The background hypothesis is that attention leads to revenue, and he wants to measure attention at any given time by means of click rates. With bitly he has access to all clicks on shortened links. I always wanted to make a [heat]map with all my tracks. I finally got some time to play with TileMill and Mapbox to make it. The map above is the result, and these are the steps to make your own:

Run a few routes :)
Get your data from RunKeeper.
Import in TileMill
Style at will.
Use Mapbox for hosting and base layer.

Get your data

Click on “export data” link under Settings page in RunKeeper. Select the dates, you might want all your data so just select a wide range. You´ll get the link on your email in a few minutes.

Warning is the easy part. Action must follow.
Facts don´t change opinions. Impressions do. In the mind of the average citizen, climate change is quite down the list of worries. If you want to encourage them to take action, link to their worries, relate to those. Use histories to link consequences.

Last week DC hosted the Open Government Data Conference, the Tech@State, the Wikimania, and more. It seems clear the momentum here for open data and Technology innovation is growing strong.

While you can read plenty of good reviews from these events I feel some important points regarding Open Data of where the ball is going are left amidst the background of where the ball is:

Don´t be ashamed of the knowns unknowns.
Open Data from the inside out, and at home.
Standards, standards, standards.
The challenge of non publicly funded open data.
Hackathons and competitions can backslash on you.

45,381 participants from 188 countries, which included 100 heads of state and their staff were present at Rio+20. The goal of this United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development was to strengthen political commitment towards sustainable development. Among the many messages gaining strength around Rio+20, a few are resonating with our participation at the conference: 1) The side events are much more interesting than the actual negotiations, albeit the lack focus on the private sector; 2) Moving beyond measuring GDP gets more traction; 3) Adaptation is a cross cutting but also overarching challenge in sustainable development; 4) Data gains relevance, yet the opportunity for a data declaration is lost.

Prímula es una revista gratuita del Hospital de Cabueñes de Gijón (Asturias). Se publica dos veces al año y está formada por artículos donados por sus autores. Se puede descargar en su web y se imprime para ser distribuida gratuitamente en el Hospital para aquellos que están internos o de visita.

Prímula es un cuaderno cultural en sentido amplio, gestado, confeccionado y distribuido por un conjunto de personas que desarrollan su actividad profesional en el Hospital de Cabueñes (Gijón) y en el que colaboran los usuarios o pacientes ingresados y ambulatorios) y sus familiares.

Ha sido un placer escribirlo y un honor pensar en que quizás pueda hacer más ameno parte del tiempo que algunos lectores han de pasar en el Hospital. Gracias Prímula!

Earlier this month my NGO (GAIN) had its annual meeting. Around 200 participants, which includes several presidents, CEOs, ambassadors and representatives of the World Bank, OAS, and more than 100 companies. The invitation list to the reception had more than 1,000 names.

I built the Invitation system almost from scratch using Google Apps Script (GAS), and I want to share the experience. The decision to engage on this was partly because I had the chance to participate on a free and open event about GAS for developers at the Google Washington DC offices (thank you!).

This idea is for a synthetic multi-beam microphone, basically allowing to select and amplify sound coming from any, and all, selectable angles and distances, at once, live or replaying the sound, and to detect their LOS velocity. Combined with a speaker, it can be a multi-beam sonar.Physically it would be an array of microphones, as the size of the lattice would define part of the resolution. The rest would come from the software. I thought of this by merging concepts from sounds, nets, radio astronomy, and optical interferometry.

Apps for Development, a year later

It’s roughly a year since we made it to the Finalists to the Apps for Development competition of the World Bank. To commemorate the date, the Bank prepared an article to assess the impact.

They contacted all finalists and made a little interview (Here is the full interview with our team). I was fascinated with the idea and eager to read the outcome. With all finalists, we share a Facebook group so we are more able to keep track of each other’s whereabouts. I do see being finalists was very positive personally and professionally for all of us. But I was also interested on the impact for all those non-finalists. Many of them jumped into the Open Data portal to participate. Are they still engaged? Was participation incentive enough to continue developing in the area? Are they likely to participate again? Unfortunately none of these questions was answered.

It is roughly one year since I joined GAIN, the Global Adaptation Institute. GAIN is dedicated to facilitate data-driven pragmatic solutions to face the challenge of adaptation to climate change. You can learn more about us here, or about my role here.

One year seems a nice excuse to stop and think about what one has done and evaluate where to improve. I am very thankful to the Institute for giving me the opportunity to work on such an important topic with amazing people. I think we have lots to celebrate and be proud of. Motivation has been and is the main engine for this journey.

Today I went to a lunch meeting with the Apps 4 Climate folks. It is basically a challenge for developers to make apps using the vast archive of open data at the Bank.

It was great to see such a motivated team behind the project. We talked about the challenge itself, requirements and timelines. It was very appropriate for Habiba Gitay to point out the importance of rightful sourcing attribution (most times the Bank acts as a portal that archives someone else’s data). Alex Barth also gave a talk about building maps with World Bank Climate Data (slides here).

Today I've published the article «Más Acción, Menos Palabras,» in the Madrid-based daily national newspaper, La Razón. One of the goals of the article is that in the wake of no clear path forward on tackling climate mitigation, concrete steps taken by world leaders attending the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting can harness the power of the private sector in helping those most vulnerable adapt to the challenges of climate change and other global forces:

The harsh reality is that, after seventeen annual international [UNFCCC COP] conferences, intentions still fall far behind action. The necessary consensus for taking global steps to address climate change becomes lost among competing agendas. They have become business meetings where solutions are not coordinated. Adaptation is a parallel track, and complementary to tackle climate change.
The meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos this week brings together over a thousand leaders representing many sectors of the economy that drive its evolution. Not surprisingly, one of the issues at the top of the agenda is climate change and global adaptation to this phenomenon.

Yes, the Sun did flare

Some of you asked me today.

Yes, the Sun is pretty active lately. Not many hours ago it did flare on its surface. With such luck that the ejecta pointed towards us. That´s rather unusual considering the tiny size of the Earth in comparison to the huge distance from the Sun.

The flare occurred because a massive magnetic rope emerged from the Sun, it twisted once there and, hence, there was a reconnection (like a shortcut) that liberated huge amounts of energy and light to space. (that´s magnetohydrodynamics 101 — the how; no one really knows why)

I tend to agree, and this is one way, I think, it could work. Just scanning 2 QR-Codes either by using your phone’s camera or the computer´s camera.

Your computer has a camera.

The server (e.g. Gmail) asks who you are. You show your QR-code. That code would be created on the phone using the algorithm that changes the pattern every few seconds. The QR-code is read by the integrated camera most computers now have.
The server accepts the ID, but still needs to confirm he is a trustworthy server and that that the login/QR-code was just not used by someone else. The server connects with the phone (since it knows the info from the QR-code) and sends a random number with which the phone makes another QR-Code. The user has to show the new QR-code.You are now sure that the person holding the phone is the person trying to access the account.
[Extra] The server (or the phone) shows few pieces of information only the user would know. Some correct, some not. If you click the wrong one, you are out. Both server and phone log you out.

The topic at hand is extremely important. Water is essential, yet billions of people face aggravating challenges with water quality, quantity, or even basic access to it.

The challenge here is to help solve these real identified problems with pragmatic software-based solutions. And I know, we know, that we can make great contributions. We, participants, as many as we are, we are not alone, as you can see. This event has the support of the World Bank, NASA, governments, Universities and companies around the world. Why? Because it’s working. The growth of this movement is based on its success, which I see is based on 3 ingredients.

My first Earthquake

Washington was struck today by an earthquake. It was not strong and there was almost no damage. Yet, it was in the capital of the USA, a somewhat unexpected and particular place. And it was my first. Now that I see nothing serious happened, I can say it was fun.

I was writing an email and I felt like there was construction going on one or 2 floors above. We are on floor 11 of 12. Like a second later I felt like someone had dropped a very heavy something above us. I felt a bit dizzy. Then I realized something wasn’t normal. I looked over the window in the far corner and I saw the reflections of light on the windows of the building opposite to us. They were also shaking! It was an earthquake!

Exactly three years ago I defended my PhD in Goettingen, Germany. Today is my birthday as Doctor. Around then I had then an offer to work at best place in the world in my field, which I accepted. I also had an invitation to interview with McKinsey and was drafted for the astronaut election process. It was a great moment.

Today I am unemployed.

So What?

I am where I am because I chose so. Pursuing your goals is not easy, but no one told me it would be. Achieving what I have, from where I started was not easy. By all means. What I am doing now is a hard step I knew I had to do. A difficult decision two years in the making. I studied science because I love science. And Technology. But most of all, how these help people be better. I studied science all the way up to earn a PhD and then also worked at a satellite and rocket facility. But something was missing. Something so important it drove me off the official path: People. As amazing, challenging and interesting as my research was, it lacked connection with the real world, with people.

Tech@State 2011: Open Source Software advocacy from the State Dept.

Last Friday the US State Department hosted its 5th Tech@State, where technologist and diplomats unite to pursue goals in education, health, and welfare worldwide. The topic for this year was Open Source Software.

All sessions are available in Ustream. I would especially recommend the one by Maccon Phillips, Dr. Linton Wells and Jeremy Allison.

The feeling is that the model has changed. It is not anymore about hiring a company to provide a closed product and give support until they stop providing service or a new one is needed. The model now is to open the data, let everyone access as much information as possible. Anyone can then build (open) products that the agencies can evaluate and use. Every agency has now the power to create such open competitions. Agencies are keen to use open source software, as they realize it has many more benefits and fewer problems. They typically hire a company to adapt the product and provide service. The extra mile comes when they liberate the improvements for everyone to use, when they adopt the winning apps on competitions, when everyone can be engaged in the innovation, and everyone benefits from it.

When Weather matters. Are we acting properly upon forecasts?

This [free as pdf] NAP book is a report from the 2008 NRC Board of Atmospheric Sciences workshop: “Progress and Priorities of U.S. Weather Research and Research-to-Operations Activities”.

Despite the chaotic nature of Weather, scientist are currently able to measure (nowcast) and predict (forecast) weather with unprecedented accuracy. Almost certainty within hours, and maybe a week at best with 50% chance. But:

Do we need to improve our capabilities? Can we? The report says yes. What can we do?
Once we have the forecast of an impending weather event, are we acting accordingly upon predictions? The report says not really.

The U.S.A. has the world´s most sophisticated and well-developed weather forecast infrastructure. The federal government also spends, annually, $5 billion in research and operations only in NOAA, and $6 billion for a dedicated agency on disasters (FEMA). Academia and private partners are also tightly involved.

Only the generation of weather forecasts costs overall $5 billion annually, but its benefits are (quoted on the book as) 6 times the cost. Despite these impressive benefits on paper, there is much room for improvement.

A [ballistic back-] mapping tool for NASA/STEREO

The video above shows the map of the Sun from 2007 to 2010. The map calculates the image as if neither the Sun or the Earth rotated, leaving thus a black region that corresponds to the section of the Sun that can´t be seen from Earth. But they do rotate, so the black region shifts in time. The interesting bit is that the solar features remain in place. This allows us to see that certain features survive several months and are indeed recurrent.

What you see here is the world response to the earthquake humanitarian crisis in Haiti.

What you see here, each flash, is someone, somewhere in the world, going into OpenStreetMap.org, looking at aerial/satellites images, identifying features and adding them to the free map.

If you want to learn, here I screencasted one of my edits back then as part of the Crisis Camp.

After just 12 hours, and over the following days a large number of additions to the map are made with many roads (green primary, red secondary) added. Also many other features were added such as the blue glowing refugee camps that emerge.

My Universe

Picture of everything I knew, saw, felt in 2007. Every moment I enjoyed, or suffered. Everything I hated, everything and everyone I loved. Every passion and every pain. Every moment with every friend or family. Every living person I know, and everyone that passed away but still lives there. Every success and every broken dream. All I learnt and all I thought I forgot. Every law of the Universe I could understand, and every crazy idea that could never get out of there. Everything I could see being and everything I could imagine.

The whole Universe, or my highly incomplete version of it, is there. There, imprinted on such an amazing, yet completely ordinary, configuration of atoms dancing as the MRI magnet tells them. There has never been one just like this one, it only existed like this for a moment, and there will never be again another one. Now that brain is changed, it always is. Hopefully for the better.

When you look at this image is just an image of a common brain. There are tons of images like this one and literally millions of living brains just like this one. But when I look at this image, it is actually my brain looking at my brain. It blows my mind...

All this to say, enjoy life. There is a whole universe of experiences in your head and a whole more of experiences waiting to get in there.

101 days as Science and Technology Policy Fellow

Today is my last day as a Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow at The National Academies. The Program, and the extension I got, is now complete after 101 days. I knew about it like one year ago, and I decided to apply for it. Back then, I could not find much info or public feedback from former fellows. In 2005, in the context of rapid global changes at the time, Congress asked the National Academies to answer this:

What are the top 10 actions, in priority order, that federal policymakers could take to enhance the science and technology enterprise so that the United States can successfully compete, prosper, and be secure in the global community of the 21st century?

What implementation strategy, with several concrete steps, could be used to implement each of those actions?

The Academies make independent, objective, and nonpartisan advice with high standards of scientific and technical quality. It stands on the credibility of more than 900 reports, many times biting the hand that feeds them. Sure enough they came up with these top action and recommendations , together with an excellent +500 pages report with a very strong rationale and the tough challenges ahead if not followed:

“Without a renewed effort to bolster the foundations of our competitiveness, we can expect to lose our privileged position.” [Last phrase of the Executive summary]

This was in 2005. So, what happened?

There was a time where only journalists would go to press releases, where only they could ask questions. They were the interface between NASA and you. That time is gone. Concept:

A big-ish widget on the screen of your smart phone (or computer, but I´ll think on mobiles for now) that shows what you most likely want to do, based on your patterns of use and other information like location, time, weather, agenda, emails, ...

Need:

Think about it. Phones today can do millions of things. But when you take your phone, you are only interested in one, and many times is highly predictable, based on time and location. Most of these actions are not addressed by the notifications the phone already has, and we all end up with too many shortcuts in too many home screen.

-When you commute everyday on the metro, if you get your phone, you most likely want to open the News, the Kindle app, or the Angry Birds.

With the burgeoning use of Internet and mobile phone technology, user-generated content (UGC) has emerged as an innovative means of sharing data.

In the last decade, subscriptions to mobile phones rose from 18% to 97% in the developed world, and from 1% to 45% in the developing world. Internet subscriptions increased 10-fold in the last 10 years, reaching now 20% of the world population. Facebook—launched in 2004— now has over 500 million users (half of users, ~5% of the world’s population, access Facebook every day). Twitter has grown to 100 million users worldwide since beginning in 2006. In 2010, Twitter hit 50 million tweets per day—an average of 600 tweets per second. UGC has shown promising advances in a broad variety of fields (e.g., epidemiological surveillance, crisis response, and e-governance, among many others).

Global Crisis Camp Day

Last Saturday I attended the Global Crisis Camp Day, on its Washington DC chapter. This event is part of the CrisisCommons effort to reach out and establish an enduring network of volunteers and contacts for future crises.

"CrisisCamp is a global network of hybrid barcamp/hackathon events which bring together people and communities who innovate crisis response and global development through technology tools, expertise and problem solving. Since 2009, CrisisCamp volunteers have created crisis response and learning events in over 10 countries with volunteers of all backgrounds who collaborate in an open environment to aggregate crisis data, develop prototype tools and train people on how to use technology tools and problem solving to aid in crisis response and global development."

I had previously volunteered for the Crisis Camp Haiti and Crisis Camp Chile. I helped them, and I loved it. I learnt from Ushahidi and OSM directly from them as they also attended those camps. I proudly mapped a small region of Haiti after the disaster. (Soon afterwards also La Corrada, my hometown.)

My already growing interest in crowd-sourcing and GIS leaped forward a great deal thanks to them. I believe with them I crossed the point of no return. It was the last push that led me to leave research and come here, to The Academies. As a matter of fact, the S&T policy paper I am writing for my Mirzayan Fellowship is about the policy implications and needs to allow these technologies to play an important role in development.

I found this lost treasure buried at a second hand bookstore. It dates back some few decades, and the USA was certainly different in 1985, when this book was published. Back then, the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam war, the energy crisis, high unemployment, and very high inflation and escalating interest rates, made any political planning difficult. There was even a raised fundamental concern over the future of American prosperity.

El próximo Viernes 6 de Agosto, a las 7:30pm, doy una charla sobre el Sol en el "Centro cívico de La Arena". La charla está abierta a todo el público y no tiene coste. Durante una hora intentaré dar una idea del conocimiento actual del Sol, de su relación con la Tierra, y de su posición con el resto del Universo.

La charla cuenta con la colaboración de la Asociación Asturiana de Astronomía Omega (organización), NASA Goddard (material divulgativo) y el centro cívico de La Arena (local y medios informáticos).

El Sol. Esa bola brillante que vemos casi todos los días en el cielo. Nos levantamos por la mañana con su luz y nos acompaña durante todo el día. Los afortunados la observan estos días acostados en la Playa de San Lorenzo. Estamos tan acostumbrados a verlo nos parece algo cotidiano, común. Pero piensen, ¿Qué saben de esa bola brillante? ¿Qué es? ¿Por qué brilla? ¿Cómo de lejos está? ¿Es grande? ¿Cuánto durará? Es entonces cuando nos damos cuenta que en realidad es un gran desconocido. De hecho, el Sol es, en muchos sentidos, la puerta al Universo que, inapreciablemente para mucha gente, está ahí fuera. En esta charla divulgativa hablaremos sobre cuál es el conocimiento moderno del Sol, y cual su relación con el Universo.

With such an appealing title, this book (2002, 120 pages, simple formatting, easy read) went straight to the top of my pile of books to read. You can get the pdf for free at the NAS press or the physical version for around 25$. I paid $10 on eBay, but I wish I had my Kindle back then!

It is truly an interesting topic. The approach aims to respond on the tricky business of advising science from inside international organizations. The UN, for example, has made several clear calls to qualitatively and quantitatively strengthen science advice across and throughout its structure (e.g. Agenda 21 Chapter 31). The main goal of such an advisory body would be then to increase awareness, rule making, oversight but also local implementation, address emerging issues and coordinate global cooperation and response.

In 1990 the Voyager 1 had passed Saturn completing its primary mission. It was then when Carl Sagan requested to flip the spacecraft to make a picture of the Earth. Of course it was too far to see anything but a dot. And that was precisely the reason the proposal had such an important symbolic value. No human device was ever that far and able to make a picture. There were many practical complaints, as the Sun, from that distance, is quite close. It could damage the camera. Indeed, the reflections of the Sun light on the spacecraft can be seen as straight lines, one of them crossing the Earth position.

I had the pleasure to attend The Google conference for Developers, in San Francisco. This conference is where Google addresses their beloved crowd of external developers.

Part of the successful business model for Google is to create an environment of openness and community where people not affiliated or paid by Google actually develop and contribute to its success. To avoid miscarriages of costly projects they like to hold the ideas and point them in the proper direction before releasing it to the wild. This conference is when new lines are announced and also when part of this transfer to the crowds occurs. They need a happy smart motivated crowd, and they are famous for doing so quite well. Free supplies of sweets, couches, sodas or even costly last generations phones are parts of this strategy. They want (they need) developers to willing to put many many hours, with the phones averages consumers will buy during the next year.

Now and then I hear people saying that a 1-hour flight is actually faster by bus or car than by plane. Yes, the plane travels way faster, but the car or bus starts closer from you and leaves you closer to your actual destination. On the bus there are not either waiting times, security... like when flying.

It is obvious that if you have to fly 4 hours or longer, other means of transportation will take much longer… Try to go from Madrid to Berlín by bus! Conversely, if you must travel 20 minutes by car there is no point to fly, even if you are rich.

La investigación y la innovación son cruciales para el desarrollo y el bienestar de la sociedad, especialmente en tiempos de crisis. En estos momentos se está demostrando que la supuesta prosperidad que daba el ladrillo no era sino pan para ayer y hambre para hoy, y la economía española sigue inmersa en la crisis de la que han salido ya varios países vecinos, que han optado por un modelo económico más sólido. En este contexto de crisis, tras una década de complacencia, se empezó a hablar con urgencia de la necesidad de un cambio de modelo en pos de una economía sostenible. Sin embargo, observamos, alarmados y con desazón, que la inversión en investigación y desarrollo es el primer “daño colateral” en las finanzas del Estado, a pesar de que sólo dedicamos a Investigación+Desarrollo+innovación (I+D+i) el 1’35% del PIB1, frente al 2% que se había marcado el PSOE como objetivo para el año 20102 o el 3% que fija como meta la Agenda de Lisboa y el Objetivo de Barcelona, cifra que ya es notablemente inferior a la inversión actual de nuestros vecinos del norte de Europa.

El daño no se limita al Gobierno central y sus presupuestos, pues la gran mayoría de las Comunidades Autónomas también ha recortado los recursos destinados a investigación o a universidades, en algunos casos en un porcentaje muy elevado. Un colectivo muy afectado por este “tijeretazo” será el de los aspirantes a entrar en la carrera investigadora y, especialmente, el de los científicos con contrato temporal, que verán en muchos casos como éste no se renueva, después de todos sus años de trabajo, durante un proceso de formación y perfeccionamiento continuo financiado en gran parte por el Estado, que desaprovecha así su inversión.

El sector científico fue totalmente marginado de las medidas anticrisis, cuando un Plan-E7 consagrado a la Investigación y a las infraestructuras científicas podría haber cumplido los mismos objetivos que el efectivamente realizado y haber supuesto un salto cualitativo aprovechable en años posteriores, a diferencia de muchas de las obras que fueron financiadas por el Gobierno central. Del mismo modo, el aumento del paro debería haber impulsado un programa nacional urgente de formación de investigadores y técnicos y de reciclaje de trabajadores de sectores excedentes; además, hubiese sido un excelente momento para impulsar las actividades de I+D+i en el sector privado, especialmente en las PYMES, las más afectadas por la crisis.

Oportunidades para conjuntar estímulo y avance de la ciencia y la tecnología no faltan.

Así, en lugar de esforzarse por obtener recursos e idear medidas de estímulo a la I+D+i, ésta ha sido la principal sufridora de la “austeridad”, lo que implicará, necesariamente, que no se puedan cumplir muchas metas. Por detrás de algo que puede sonar tan abstracto como sistema de I+D+i, se esconden cosas tan concretas como la investigación del cambio climático, el descubrimiento de nuevos medicamentos, la optimización energética y el desarrollo de fuentes de energía alternativas, la lucha contra el cáncer, etc. El recorte financiero implicará necesariamente un retraso en estas y otras investigaciones.

Esta amenaza coyuntural, muy preocupante por sí sola, se ve agravada en gran medida
porque el sistema científico español adolece de una serie de males estructurales, endémicos, que, en el mejor de los casos, son parcheados de un modo deficiente. Entre estos, podemos señalar:

1. Cambio continuo de los responsables burocráticos y de las estructuras de gestión de la investigación.

2. Falta de un calendario fijo de convocatorias de los diversos programas de ayudas a grupos y proyectos de investigación y atrasos burocráticos en su concesión.

3. Ausencia de continuidad y estabilidad en los programas de Recursos Humanos, con continuos cambios en las fechas de las convocatorias y reiteradas dilaciones en la resolución.

4. Arbitrariedad y falta de planificación en los sistemas de selección, promoción y
estabilización, que implican la carencia de una política de RRHH sólida, competitiva y con un proyecto a largo plazo.

5. Paralización de la nueva Ley de la Ciencia y de diversas iniciativas legislativas (EPDI8, PL-A9, PL-FJI10), necesarias para la regulación de las figuras de las diversas carreras del sistema científico (gestora, docente, técnica e investigadora).

La comunidad científica ha expresado su más firme rechazo ante una situación que es
insostenible. Creemos que es necesario mostrar nuestro malestar por esta situación y que es hora de salir a la calle y transmitir un mensaje claro, directo y contundente al Gobierno central, a los diferentes gobiernos autonómicos y a toda la sociedad española.

Exigimos una apuesta clara y decidida por una sociedad basada en la investigación y el desarrollo como pilares de futuro, mediante un Pacto de Estado por la Ciencia y la Investigación.

Exigimos un compromiso real, escrito y a largo plazo de los partidos políticos, con participación de los diferentes agentes sociales implicados y de las Comunidades Autónomas, para dotar de estabilidad y proyección al sistema científico español.

Exigimos un incremento real (no basado en créditos reembolsables) de los recursos públicos y privados en el sector de I+D+i, de modo que en el plazo más corto posible se iguale la media europea en % de PIB y que se supere esa cifra en un plazo no superior a diez años, de forma que la economía española se convierta en un motor sólido y estable, a la altura de las potencias más desarrolladas. Así mismo, se han de evaluar y revisar, de acuerdo con los resultados o las políticas estratégicas, las subvenciones públicas al sector privado de I+D+i.

Exigimos el diseño de una carrera investigadora basada en la planificación racional de las etapas y en la profesionalización digna de los diferentes estamentos del sistema científico, y que vaya acompañada de una política de recursos humanos rigurosa y coherente que favorezca la estabilización de los investigadores que hayan superado las evaluaciones oportunas y la promoción del personal debidamente examinado y acreditado.

Por todo esto, las diferentes asociaciones, sociedades, sindicatos, grupos e investigadores abajo firmantes creemos que es el momento de que toda la comunidad científica (gestores, docentes, técnicos y científicos) y la sociedad en general se unan en una gran movilización para lanzar un fuerte mensaje al gobierno estatal y a los gobiernos autonómicos: es necesario que todos juntos apostemos clara y decididamente por la ciencia y la innovación en este país.

La foto no tiene relación con el artículo del periodista de Antena 3. O sí.
Es un debate moral. Gran artículo, gran foto, … gran trabajo. Como periodista su trabajo es hacernos llegar la realidad, que seamos conscientes de ella. Quizás el objetivo último es informarnos para que creemos la tan necesaria ayuda. Lo mal que lo pasan algunos, lo lejos que están en muchos aspectos… y lo fácil que es ayudarles.

Por otro lado, es imposible no pensar en esa nube de fotógrafos desplazados que no están, oficialmente y en el sentido literal, para ayudar. Ven la catástrofe, buscan lo más fotogénico, el correcto zoom, esperan a la mejor pose, y flash! foto… y se van corriendo a mandarlas al mundo exterior.

En el fondo son mercenarios de la desgracia ajena. Hay muchas razones para criticarlos, pero sin su trabajo seguramente la ayuda desde el otro lado de la balanza no habría calado tanto. Duro trabajo… no sé si sería capaz de asumir tanta responsabilidad.

Cuando el tsunami de Indonesia recuerdo haber leído una gran frase: “Qué será de nosotros cuando las cámaras se hayan ido!"

Para eso tendremos que seguir contando con organismos internacionales. Que éstos funcionen a largo plazo depende de, cést la vie, la image pública que se tenga de ellos. A mi modo de ver ésta se funda en dos pilares: Su buen trabajo, y la valoración que todos hagamos de ese trabajo. En ambos casos se reduce a lo de siempre, la educación de cada uno. Educación como persona, de los que decidirán unirse activamente, y de los que se dedicarán a otras cosas (como yo). Pero conscientes de uno mismo, del mundo en que viven, de su papel en él y de lo que puede hacer para mejorarlo.

Donen, colaboren, … pero sobre todo conozcan, sepan y preocúpense porque existan organismos como la ONU, la Cruz Roja, …

I just realized it is actually pretty easy to help. What we are doing now is helping with the GIS (localizing stuff on maps for now).
Open Street Map is an open source map that is being used by people on the ground to locate roads, places, …

The thing is that really helpful and detailed satellites images are being gathered, but the information on it needs to be located.

To help just do this:
1.- Go to osm.org and make an account.
2.-Locate a place that needs to be worked on. The Downtown area is quite covered so may be is good to go a bit further out.
3-Go to “Edit mode” clicking the button.
4-Add a background image to start adding roads. We are using an image recently donated by Digital Globe. The URL is https://maps.nypl.org/tilecache/1/dg_crisis/!/!/!.jpg

Manifiesto: En defensa de los derechos fundamentales en internet

Ante la inclusión en el Anteproyecto de Ley de Economía sostenible de modificaciones legislativas que afectan al libre ejercicio de las libertades de expresión, información y el derecho de acceso a la cultura a través de Internet, los periodistas, bloggers, usuarios, profesionales y creadores de Internet manifestamos nuestra firme oposición al proyecto, y declaramos que:

Los derechos de autor no pueden situarse por encima de los derechos fundamentales de los ciudadanos, como el derecho a la privacidad, a la seguridad, a la presunción de inocencia, a la tutela judicial efectiva y a la libertad de expresión.

La suspensión de derechos fundamentales es y debe seguir siendo competencia exclusiva del poder judicial. Ni un cierre sin sentencia. Este anteproyecto, en contra de lo establecido en el artículo 20.5 de la Constitución, pone en manos de un órgano no judicial -un organismo dependiente del ministerio de Cultura-, la potestad de impedir a los ciudadanos españoles el acceso a cualquier página web.

La nueva legislación creará inseguridad jurídica en todo el sector tecnológico español, perjudicando uno de los pocos campos de desarrollo y futuro de nuestra economía, entorpeciendo la creación de empresas, introduciendo trabas a la libre competencia y ralentizando su proyección internacional.

La nueva legislación propuesta amenaza a los nuevos creadores y entorpece la creación cultural. Con Internet y los sucesivos avances tecnológicos se ha democratizado extraordinariamente la creación y emisión de contenidos de todo tipo, que ya no provienen prevalentemente de las industrias culturales tradicionales, sino de multitud de fuentes diferentes.

Los autores, como todos los trabajadores, tienen derecho a vivir de su trabajo con nuevas ideas creativas, modelos de negocio y actividades asociadas a sus creaciones. Intentar sostener con cambios legislativos a una industria obsoleta que no sabe adaptarse a este nuevo entorno no es ni justo ni realista. Si su modelo de negocio se basaba en el control de las copias de las obras y en Internet no es posible sin vulnerar derechos fundamentales, deberían buscar otro modelo.

Consideramos que las industrias culturales necesitan para sobrevivir alternativas modernas, eficaces, creíbles y asequibles y que se adecuen a los nuevos usos sociales, en lugar de limitaciones tan desproporcionadas como ineficaces para el fin que dicen perseguir.

Internet debe funcionar de forma libre y sin interferencias políticas auspiciadas por sectores que pretenden perpetuar obsoletos modelos de negocio e imposibilitar que el saber humano siga siendo libre.
Exigimos que el Gobierno garantice por ley la neutralidad de la Red en España, ante cualquier presión que pueda producirse, como marco para el desarrollo de una economía sostenible y realista de cara al futuro.

Proponemos una verdadera reforma del derecho de propiedad intelectual orientada a su fin: devolver a la sociedad el conocimiento, promover el dominio público y limitar los abusos de las entidades gestoras.

En democracia las leyes y sus modificaciones deben aprobarse tras el oportuno debate público y habiendo consultado previamente a todas las partes implicadas. No es de recibo que se realicen cambios legislativos que afectan a derechos fundamentales en una ley no orgánica y que versa sobre otra materia.

Cátedra Celestino Mutis

Esta semana he sido invitado a dar una charla sobre el Sol dentro de la Cátedra Celestino Mutis, organizado por el Observatorio Nacional de Colombia y celebrado en el auditorio Leon de Greiff de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

Es un gran placer hacer divulgación, pero que le inviten a uno a hacerlo delante de +1200 personas ávidas de conocimiento en astronomía, es un gran honor. Muchas gracias.

Patentes de medicamentos. Estado actual

El otro día tuve el placer de aprender un montón sobre el estado actual del mundo de las patentes médicas. Es uno de esos valores añadidos de vivir en una ciudad como Washington DC. En este post intentaré resumir lo que entendí, con mis comentarios en paréntesis.

El meollo de la cuestión es la innovación, y cómo proteger/recompensar ese esfuerzo. Existen 2 vías:
1) modelo filantrópico gubernamental. El gobierno da pasta para que se investigue algo. Lo bueno es que investiga cosas fundamentales y pueden arriesgar más, puesto que no buscan beneficio económico. Lo malo es que no tienen capacidad de hacer todo el proceso de ensayos o implantarlo/comercializarlo.
2)Modelo privado de inversiones. Lo bueno es que tienen más capacidad de optimización y implantación, lo malo es que en el fondo lo que buscan es beneficio económico.

En la práctica las dos vías acaban en la empresa privada. (cómo podemos permitir esto!) En el caso de investigaciones pagadas con fondos públicos, si éstas van bien, se acaban regalando a las empresas privadas para que hagan los estudios y se queden con el beneficio (untando al científico que lo hizo posible, obviamente). Por ejemplo la vacuna del cáncer cervical, descubierta en el NIH de Washington y regalada a una farmacéutica para que la comercialice por 850$ cuando su coste de fabricación es de 15$. ( Esto me parece un ERROR GARRAFAL de perogrullo y muy estúpido. Lo que hace falta es crear una estructura que pueda sacar adelante todo el proceso sin involucrar al mundo privado. )

Las farmacéuticas tienen su punto bueno porque son capaces de hacer todo el proceso lo más óptimo posible, gestionar la implantación, pruebas, … Son las productoras de la mayoría de medicamentos del mundo. Eso sí, tienden (obviamente) a buscar los mayores beneficios y por tanto centrarse en los productos que les reportarán más pasta y a olvidar aquellos que requieren mucho riesgo y no tienen pacientes ricos. Por ejemplo, prefieren “innovar” en una aspirina con sabor limón primaveral que investigar enfermedades que solo pasan en el Congo, o a muy poca gente (como entre otras muchas, la ataxia). Más aún, prefieren algo que cure los síntomas o sea temporal a algo que inmunice para siempre. Si la gente se hace inmune, no compra más.

La forma en que los gobiernos protegen la buena labor de las farmacéuticas es restringir que otra gente use lo que ellas descubren. De esta forma las altas inversiones de los ensayos clínicos (de los que salen bien o los que nunca salen) pueden recuperarse por las ventas exclusivas. Existe un conjunto de reglas que “todos” los países se comprometen a cumplir, por “civismo”. Básicamente a no piratear.

El tema es que (oh, sorpresa) existen crisis médicas, epidemias y demás que han obligado a introducir métodos legales para saltarse las patentes y poder piratear. Eso sí, puede que involucre pagar un pequeño canon para compensar parcialmente el lucro cesante. En estos casos son las empresas genéricas las que fabrican las pastillas.

Interesante tema es la industria de empresas genéricas. No innovan y su trabajo legal es muy limitado. Resulta que la mayoría de la industria genérica está situada en India. Lo que al principio parecía una industria sin mucho futuro (oh, sorpresa de nuevo ) es que éstas pueden llegar a innovar más que las convencionales y hacer muy buen trabajo.
(aquí es donde yo grito: por qué carajos no se crean instituciones al estilo BID que promocionen medicamentos genéricos o investigación en enfermedades no comerciales?, o que el BID, OMS o FMI ayuden a esta industria creando un departamento para esto).

Toda esta casuística reciente de genéricos, pandemias mediáticas, licencias obligatorias (lo de saltarse la patente en casos graves), lo de no innovar, … hace que exista una creciente preocupación por cambiar las cosas, o al menos ver que algo no va bien.

Aquí entra la fundación Gates (Bill gates, el de Windows). Resulta que tiene MUCHA pasta y la dedica a 1 ó 2 cosas, así que tiene MUCHO peso. Más que muchos gobiernos. Gates es un filántropo, lo cual es muy loable pero extremadamente aberrante, teniendo en cuenta que la pasta que tiene Gates la saca de las licencias privadas. Ser filántropo en vacunas implica reconocer que el modelo de farmacéuticas no funciona bien ( por ejemplo los de que no innoven en cosas importantes para pobres). La (sucia) solución de Gates es ayudar-alquilar a las farmacéuticas. Pagarles parte de la investigación a cambio de exigirles un coste barato del producto, pero reteniendo la patente y los derechos parciales de explotación.
Está bien porque salvará muchas vidas, pero estás haciendo un bailout a una empresa que negocia con la enfermedad. ( in your face.)

Lo que últimamente se propone es salir de ese bucle desligando el precio del medicamento con la inversión de crearlo. ¿Cómo? Por ejemplo dar premios a aquellos que hayan descubierto un posible medicamento, para que puedan costearse el proceso de pruebas médicas. Los premios obligan a que las patentes que se asocien a los resultados sean mucho más abiertas y los medicamento mas baratos y disponibles ipso-facto a las empresas genéricas, reteniendo ciertos royalties mínimos. ( Desde mi punto de vista sigue necesitando que alguien pague la investigación inicial, así que no acaba de solucionar por completo el problema ). Problema añadido es que el que pagaría el premio serían las fundaciones y, obviamente, Gates dirá que nanai de la china. Otra fundación, la Clinton, es más proclive a ello, pero como Hillary es una prominente imagen política, no pueden mojarse mucho.

Quedó claro que la industria farmacéutica tiene mucho poder en los organismos internacionales. Esto es así porque los lobbies que ésta hace a los gobiernos que forman parte de esas organizaciones (como la OMS) luchan por mantener esas normas creadas para proteger la inversión de las farmacéuticas. Hay mucha economía, favores entrelazados e inercia económica para cambiar.

También quedó claro que mucho grupos están luchando por cambiar esto y muy posiblemente la próxima generación de políticos verán las cosas distintas. (Espero que algún día prohibamos las patentes. A nadie se le ocurre patentar fabricas de fotones coherentes y todos tenemos láseres en los CDs, DVDs, … y eso que ha llevado muchas muchas horas de investigación y tests. Idem con otras muchas cosas)

Con agrado y sorpresa recibo un email pidiendo permiso para usar esta foto. Pide permiso para usarla en un libro sin pagarme ningún dinero. Me pide que le firme un “There are no restrictions on this license and I understand I will not be paid.” No me parece mal, él se tomará su tiempo para crear el libro, algo físico. Que lo venda si quiere, es su trabajo. Mi trabajo en él fue permitir usar una copia digital, es decir, no he hecho ningún trabajo, por eso se la doy gratis.

A vueltas con la Oko Bola

En Agosto del año pasado, cuando fui a casa por vacaciones, mi padre me enseñó “la bola que lava”, cosa que me sonó un poco magufa. No sé si por espíritu científico o por procrastinación, me dio por escribir una pequeña entrada sobre ella. Nada especial, sólo mis comentarios al tema.

Mi conclusión era (y es) que NO me la creo.

Curiosamente Google decidió que era bueno enlazar esa entrada cuando la gente buscaba cosas como “oko ball, “oko-ball”, “okoball funciona” o “bola que lava” . Cuantas más visitas, mejor reputación que le daba Google, así que acabó siendo, con diferencia, la página más visitada de mi blog:

El pasado sábado ganamos las elecciones del CRE de Washington. El Consejo de Residentes Extranjeros (CRE) será el grupo que ayude al cónsul a mejorar las cosas para los españoles en Washington Dc y alrededores.

La historia de las candidaturas, campaña, elecciones y demás es bastante curiosa, pero no es lo que quería contar. Lo que más me llamó la atención es el resultado.

Resulta que había dos candidaturas, una apoyada por el PSOE y otra por el PP. Ambas dicen no estar politizadas pero ambas juegan muy cerca de ello. En la que yo estoy (“la de PSOE”) puedo decir que se mantuvo coherente, práctica y real, si no no estaría en ella.

Via menéame llego a esta sensata teoría sobre el accidente, de la mano de un piloto que pudo haber sufrido el mismo accidente.

Lo que dice, muy resumido, es que el avión atravesó una bolsa de aire muy caliente (comparado con el frío que debería hacer). Al estar más caliente la densidad es menor y la cantidad de oxígeno para quemar en el motor disminuye). Lo de la presión hace que la sustentación del avión disminuya mucho. Para compensar puedes ir más rápido, que al parecer es lo que intentaría el piloto automático. Pero al haber menos rendimiento del motor, pues no puedes. Además, la aerodinámica del avión no lo permitiría. Una vez entrado en pérdida, mala cosa mover tal mastodonte.

Last week I went to listen to a talk by Nancy Grace Roman. She was one of the first women doing (astronomical) research. She also worked at NRL, where I work now, and then at NASA, where she was part of many missions, including Hubble.

It was just amazing. Listening to a person that could be your grandmother talking about things you just learnt (parallax, relativity, cosmic rays, ….) Alucinante.

Un domingo cualquiera, me doy un paseo por el Mall bajo el Sol primaveral. Me dirijo al museo Smithsonian de Historia Natural, que por cierto tiene una exposición de orquídeas muy chula estos días. Al entrar voy directo a preguntar:
-Buenos días, busco un esqueleto humano
-Hmm, piso de arriba a la derecha.

Supongo que no muchos otros sitios permiten una conversación tan surrealista. Descubro una exposición muy chula de huesos humanos. Disecciones, medidas, tipos. Los hay con balazos, tras enfermedades, con prótesis, … Al fondo veo lo que estaba buscando:

y ésta es la historia que me trajo el domingo al museo: :
Grover S. Krantz era un profesor antropólogo de la Universidad Washington State que se murió de cáncer en 2002. Su deseo fue donar su cuerpo a la ciencia con la condición que le expusieran al público en el museo. Tras estudiar con cuerpo varias cosas, cómo la rapidez de la descomposición de la carne (importante para los forenses), el museo cumplió su promesa y dispuso sus huesos, implantes dentales incluidos, junto a su perro y un letrero que cuenta su historia.

Un esqueleto con historia. No que el resto de la sala no tenga historia. Todos han soportado el peso de una vida, con sus problemas, enfermedades, fracturas, … pero lo interesante de éste es que su dueño estaba tan convencido de la utilidad de la ciencia, fue tanta su pasión por la antropología, que decidió ser parte de ella. Apostaría que casi todas las religiones considerarían esto sacrilegio, y por eso me gusta más la idea. Ojalá la sociedad nos enseñara a afrontar la muerte de mejor manera que mirando para otro lado o con religión. Me parece un buen paso pero, la verdad, no creo que la pobre viuda aparezca por allí…

Hablo de que la sociedad progrese, de un futuro sin magufos ni religiones,… pero luego llego a casa y veo cosas como este video y estas 2 noticias y pierdo aún más la fe en la gente. Hay tanto por hacer… :)

Seguimiento y predicción de retrasos de vuelos

En Estados Unidos, y en otros países (España NO), la localización de un avión es un dato público. Eso hace que existan páginas que te digan dónde está exactamente cualquier vuelo. ( E.g. ). Esto es súper útil si por ejemplo esperas a alguien que llega en avión. Ves por donde está y la hora esperada de llegada, y la trayectoria del avión.

Las trayectorias de vuelo es una curiosa combinación de factores que en definitiva buscan gastar el mínimo combustible sin retrasos. La trayectoria debería ser una geodésica ( la más corta en una geometría dada, en este caso una “casiesfera”). La altura de vuelo es también importante. Volar demasiado bajo, aparte de peligroso, necesita mucho combustible porque hay demasiado aire que frena el avión. Además, si subes a la capa atmosférica siguiente (la estratosfera) allí ya no hay tantas nubes, ni vientos turbulentos. La mayor parte de lo que llamamos “tiempo” pasa en la capa inferior, la troposfera. Si subes demasiado ya no hay suficiente aire con el que hacer trabajar las turbinas o mantener la alas del avión planeando. Además que la no atenuación de la radiación solar empieza a ser peligrosa. Por eso la altitud de crucero suele ser la estratosfera baja.

Una cosa curiosa de la estratosfera es que a veces hay vientos muy fuertes, sobre todo en la tropopausa (lo que divide ambas capas). Hay muchos tipos de ondas y fenómenos curiosos allí, pero a lo que voy es a los aviones. Lo que querrían las compañías es tener siempre vientos que les lleven de cola, y les empujen al destino. Esos vientos, que se llaman “jet streams” pueden ser de hasta 398 Km/h. Por eso hay gente que se dedica a medirlos y predecirlos y las compañías los usan para trazar las rutas.

Esos chorros de vientos pueden ser muy fuertes y al entrar o salir de ellos se pueden pasar por turbulencias bastante fuertes.
Las molestas turbulencias casi siempre se sufren cuando estas abajo en la troposfera, o por zonas de la troposfera que suben un poco a la estratosfera ( el proceso es “convective overshot”, que no pienso traducir porque suena horrible… “sobredisparo convectivo”?). La mayoría de las veces los radares las ven (diferente densidad) y se pueden evitar. Sin embargo, los chorros de la estratofera pueden conllevar turbulencias muy fuertes, y puede que no se vean en los radares, así que si te pillan, te pillaron, todos a sus asientos y abrocharse el cinturón.

Las flechas son el viento y las zonas grises donde están los chorros de viento, que se suelen usar para ir hacia el Este.

Gracias a ellos, y a la localización de los aviones, puedo saber si el avión se retrasa, si se va a encontrar un chorro de viento de esos, o si se adelantará la llegada del vuelo. En mi caso:

Parece todo tranquilo por el atlántico. Un poco de meneo al llegar a la costa, si el piloto no puede evitar ir en contra de ese jetstream. Me voy, que llego tarde al aeropuerto…

Desde que tengo unos 5 años o así siempre quise ser astrofísico (entonces lo llamaba “estudiador de las estrellas”). Cuanto más tiempo pasa, más me gusta lo que hago. De hecho, tiende a gustarme cada vez más el explicar por qué pienso que la astrofísica es bonita. Por eso cada vez me involucro más en actividades divulgativas.

Sostengo que debería existir una obligación inherente a todo aquél que reciba fondos públicos para investigar, por la que tenga que dedicar un ~5% de su tiempo a explicar a la sociedad lo que hace. Debería ser posible para cualquier persona el poder acceder al concepto de la investigación de cualquier científico. Da igual que estudie cáncer de mama o cromodinámica cuántica. De hecho, si estudia cromodinámica cuántica debería estar muy interesado en que la sociedad sepa de qué va eso y por qué es importante investigarlo.

One of the key goals of 100 Hours of Astronomy is to have as many people as possible look through a telescope as Galileo did for the first time 400 years ago. 100 Hours of Astronomy will take place from 2-5 April when the Moon goes from first quarter to gibbous, good phases for early evening observing. Saturn will be the other highlight of early evening observing events.

Cuando en Octubre me levanté en una conferencia a dar mi opinión, nunca pensé que me llevaría a esto…

2009 será el Año Internacional de la Astronomía. Se trata de una iniciativa mundial auspiciada por múltiples entidades, gobiernos, asociaciones, … España también forma parte, y de hecho están consiguiendo involucrar a mucha gente y entidades.

En Octubre del año pasado, a pesar de estar en la recta final de la tesis, fui a una conferencia sobre la comunicación de la ciencia. Muy interesante, aunque en realidad el tema era preparar el Año Internacional de la Astronomía.
Recuerdo que mi entonces empleador, el Instituto de Investigación Max Planck para el estudio del Sistema Solar, me puso problemas para pagar esa conferencia porque no estaba “directamente relacionada con mi tema de trabajo”. Mi opinión personal es que la divulgación debería ser apoyada o incluso obligada para todos nosotros los científicos. Por eso acabé yendo en el vuelo más barato y al hostal más barato (y peligroso) que he estado en mi vida. Recuerdo la cara anonadada del que me preguntó en la conferencia dónde me alojaba. Era justo el sitio donde nos dijeron que no fuéramos. Mi habitación, con 3 literas y un armario carcomido y roto, la compartía con otros 5 tipos, uno de ellos extremada y constantemente borracho. La calle estaba llena de putas y ruido por la noches, un show. Y yo con mi portátil en una bolsa de plástico y mi porta-póster… Mientras la gente se iba por las noches a cenar yo me compraba unos zumos y comida rápida para no gastar mucho dinero… en fin, grandes recuerdos de la tesis.

La conferencia en sí fue súper interesante. Me sirvió para conocer muchos proyectos por todo el mundo sobre divulgación, conocer divulgadores que hacen un montón de cosas, o incluso conocer un poco de “teoría de la divulgación científica”, cosa que ni sabía que existía (es un tipo de “ciencias” sociales). Fue allí donde comprobé de primera mano la increíble maquinaría que se estaba gestando detrás de las palabras “2009 Año Internacional de la Astronomía”. Muchas, muchas horas de trabajo, (casi) exclusivamente por gente que su pasión y trabajo en la vida en (sólo) la divulgación, y en muchos casos, no pagada. Sólo escuchar la cantidad de proyectos y actividades que se estaban preparando era motivador. Yo fui allí a presentar un póster de mi experiencia de publicar un video en la página astronómica del día…

Me llamó la atención lo poco que se hacía con física solar. No es que quisiera barrer para casa. No quiero que “mi” tema sea más trabajado que otros, no es una competición. Pero tuve la sensación que algo tan susceptible de divulgación, de tan fácil acceso como el Sol no estuviera siquiera presente (al menos en lo que había escuchado hasta entonces). A pesar de que muchos grandes estuvieran allí no me sentí intimidado, el ambiente era muy relajado y cooperativo, así que expuse mis dudas en una sesión abierta. Me escucharon y de hecho lo incluyeron en la charla final de la conferencia.

En los meses después, aparte de terminar la tesis, me fue picando poco a poco el gusanillo de ayudar más y más, y al final el coordinador del evento internacional (Pedro Russo, un amigo) me animó a que montara un grupo de trabajo de física. La idea era, y es, simplemente ayudar y promover actividades divulgativas relacionadas directa o indirectamente con el Sol. Me preocupó que se tomara como un lobby competitivo, así que siempre intenté hacerlo a nivel colaborativo. Solo aportar mi ayuda donde pudiera, sin títulos.

Pero la cosa creció y creció, cada vez involucró más gente y más actividades, así que decidimos montar una página web, esta:

La Federación de Usuarios y Consumidores Independientes estima que cada persona se gastará 814 euros en Navidades. Es un montón. Supongo que incluye gastos en regalos, cenas, viajes, compras, fin de año …

Muchas ONGs te cuentan lo mal que viven otras personas en Africa para hacerte sentir culpable por lo privilegiado que eres y lo poco que te das cuenta.
Pues es cierto.

Pero en vez de enfocarlo así, prefiero pensar positivamente. Para nosotros 25 euros no es nada, pero para un afgán, por decir algo, es mucho, podría por ejemplo poder montar al fin su negocio y salir del círculo vicioso de la pobreza. O ayudar a una mujer a independizarse en una sociedad machista.

Regala créditos.

Kiva es un ejemplo de ello. Se trata de un portal de microcréditos.

En la página ves la lista de proyectos personales de gente de países del tercer mundo para hacer realidad su sueño. Escoges el que más te gusta. Lo pagas tú todo y ayudas en un fondo común con otras personas. Kiva se lo da a una ONG local que le ayuda a gestionarlo, y en un año, o el tiempo que sea, esa persona te lo devuelve. Tú ves los proyectos, tú eliges el nivel de riesgo.

Si, es posible que le vaya mal, o que enferme (de sida por ejemplo) o se muera por cualquier razón, o que lo robe, o que se lo quede la ONG local (Kiva intenta evitar esto, obviamente). Puedes poner mil excusas y muchas serán ciertas. De hecho, casi el 3% no devuelve el dinero. El riesgo de perder tu inversión es real, pero no estamos hablando de un negocio, estamos hablando de vida, de futuro, de esperanza. Nunca ha sido tan fácil poder ayudar. Sólo a un click de distancia.

A los anticapitalistas que vean esto como el sistema que realimenta la injusticia. A aquellos que lean este proyecto como una fábrica de negocios capitalistas. No seas imbécil, estamos ayudando a personas a que puedan vivir, vete a contarle tu cuento a él directamente, a ver que opina de tu discurso. Y sí, tienes razón, es mejor darles el dinero. Puedes donarlo si quieres, no te faltan sitios. O ir a trabajar con ellos, adelante.

…814 euros en Navidades, sabes cuánto es el préstamo medio de los usuarios de este sitio? 138 euros. Eso es suficiente para abrir una tienda en Tanzania.

La base de datos de Google

Cada vez que busco algo en Internet uso principalmente Google, y como yo millones de personas. Tantas que se estima que Google recibe 100 millones de búsquedas al día (tantos como habitantes tiene Méjico, por ejemplo).

Google sabe lo que busco, pero no sólo eso, sino un montón de datos mucho más interesantes. Saben a qué hora lo busco, desde qué ordenador, qué sistema operativo, …

Pero Google no sólo es búsquedas. Tienen correo, blog, imágenes, mapas, documentos … un montón de servicios. Cada uno añade nuevas fuentes de datos: tu nombre, tus correos, tu localización, el contenido de tus blogs.

Saben si trasnochas, si buscas habitualmente sobre enfermedades, qué profesión encaja mejor con tus búsquedas, que buscan los trabajadores desde una empresa, dónde viven, cuánto tiempo llevan trabajando allí, quiénes buscan desde el mismo ordenador, tu cumpleaños, tu estado civil, que tipo de cosas buscas en los mapas, que videos ves en YouTube, qué fotos te gustan, qué series buscas, con quién chateas en Gtalk, quién ve tus fotos en Picasa, a dónde y cuando viajas, …

Lo saben porque lo has escrito en alguno de sus múltiples servicios o lo deducen del patrón de búsquedas.

Éso son datos, y cada día que pasa, mucho más. Muchos datos. Pero lo interesante de el tema no son los puros datos, sino lo que puedes sacar de ellos. Eso es lo que alguna gente llama “metadatos”. Esa base de datos tiene un valor incalculable. cualquier empresa pagaría millones sólo por saber alguno de los muchos datos que manejan.

No estoy siendo conspiranóico. Es un hecho que esos datos están allí. Google no es una ONG, no trabaja por el bien común. Como cualquier otra empresa en un sistema capitalista tiene que obtener beneficios, y pagar a sus 20.000 empleados. El 99% de sus beneficios los obtiene en publicidad. Aparte de su popularidad, ¿no será porque sabe muy bien a quién enseñar qué anuncio?

No soy ningún experto y se me ocurren muchas búsquedas interesantes que hacer en esa base de datos, o cómo sacar información privada del estilo cuando dejas de tener novia, o cuando estás enfermo de qué o cuando eres más susceptible de comprar qué cosas.

Que no? Un ejemplo claro. Anticipar, antes que nadie, cuando será la siguiente epidemia de catarro en cierta ciudad. Esto es lo que ha hecho, y dicho, Google hace poco. Han contabilizado aquellas búsquedas relacionadas con el catarro, sus síntomas o aquellos datos relacionados con ellos, y los comparan con los datos pasados. Resultado: sus predicciones son mejores que las oficiales, y llegan 2 semanas antes.

Interesantemente Google también ofrece la posibilidad de fisgar en su base de datos: Google Trends. Este servicio te muestra datos de búsquedas. Obviamente son datos sesgados, sin índices absolutos ni otros valores. Pero simples búsquedas en Google Trends ya muestran tendencias muy interesantes: crema solar, compras, cv (buscamos trabajo menos en navidades), bichos, … Todo esto son ejemplo que ya supongo que van a dar fluctuaciones. Lo interesante es que teniendo toda la base de datos puedes hacer muchas más pruebas y sacar fluctuaciones imprevistas. Y ahí es donde está el negocio.

Google es capaz de saber que quieren sus usuarios, y cuando y cómo. Y lo que pueden pagar. Saben por tanto qué empresas comprar que van a darles beneficios. Saben lo que va a estar de moda, o lo que va a dejar de serlo. Y quieren más datos, cuantos más, mejor, y saben cuál es la mejor manera de conseguirlos.

Todo eso me ha estado dando vueltas en la cabeza desde hace un par de días que me compré el Google Phone. Nada más encenderlo te pregunta tu gmail mail y partir de ahí ya sabe muchas más cosas. No hace falta que espíe tus datos directamente, sólo el hecho de tener el teléfono y usarlo es una variable más para cuadrar la base de datos. Por cierto, el teléfono en sí no es ninguna maravilla.

¿Qué nos depara el futuro? Si la tendencia sigue así Google seguirá ofreciendo productos geniales que nos encantan y usaremos, dándole cada vez más datos de nosotros. La información es poder, y Google acabará sabiendo más de nosotros que nosotros mismos, o cualquier otro. Da un poco de miedo. En muchos sentidos (sobre todo comerciales) somos nuestros datos, nuestra privacidad se valora mucho, y la hemos dado gratis. Nos hemos vendido a las comodidades digitales.

Pongámonos un poco paranoicos. “No hacer el mal” es la promesa de Google. No se sabe muy bien a que se refieren ni si siempre se mantendrán en esa moral. Pero si quieren hacer mal, tendrán mucho poder. El poder de los datos. La única forma de quitarle poder a Google, cuando llegue el momento, es simplemente quitárselo. Si los datos son públicos, Google pierde el poder. ¿De que sirve ahora robar libros para montar una Biblioteca de Alexandría si la Wikipedia es libre y gratuita?. Si se crean otras empresas parecidas y la gente lo acoge de manera parecida, será fatal para Google. Si publicamos nuestros datos, será el fin de Google, pero al precio de perder nuestra privacidad. Cosa poco probable. Quizás el gobierno de turno tenga que pararle los pies si se portan mal… Quien sabe, pero yo creo que algo pasará a medio plazo. La tentación es demasiado golosa.

I am an astrophysicist. It means that I study the Universe, a little bit more specifically, the relation of the Sun and the Earth. More than a job I consider it a privilege for being paid to do so… and a responsibility towards society to let them join us the excitements of science.

Astrophysics

Astrophysics is rather a special kind of science. Most sciences rely on experiments to test their ideas or further investigate a phenomenon. With astrophysics we simply can´t. We cannot move a star, or squeeze a black hole, create a planet or throw tons of plasma against a moon.

No sé muy bien como acabé encontrando esta capa de Google Earth:
Tracking Satellites

Se trata de la posición, en tiempo casi real, de todos los satélites que orbitan la Tierra. Bueno, de aquellos que los americanos vigilan. Y, obviamente, faltan los militares, y seguro que mucho que ya no funcionen. El kmz es de esta empresa, y Google earth, bueno, creo que todos lo conocemos.

Esta capa ayuda a hacerse uno a la idea de la cantidad de satélites que están ahí fuera. De lo dependientes de ellos que podemos ser, y de la cantidad de basura que estamos generando, que ya traspasa la frontera del espacio.

Los hay de comunicaciones, científicos, de gobiernos, de empresas privadas, de hacer fotos, … de todos los colores y tamaños.

Los de órbita baja se mueven muy rápido (si no se caerían), pero duran también menos, porque se van frenando con la fricción de la tenue atmósfera. Si pinchas con el botón derecho a un satélite puedes pintar su órbita. Los que están bajos a unos 300 km dan la vuelta a la Tierra en 90 minutos. Por ejemplo la Estación Espacial Internacional.

Cuanto más arriba están más lento van, de hecho, a una altura de unos 35700 Km, tardan 24 horas, o sea, la misma velocidad con la que gira la Tierra. Lo que pasa entonces es que están siempre sobre el mismo punto de la Tierra, son los geoestacionarios, y hay algo así como 300.

Afortunadamente los satélites, aunque puedan ser grandes como autobuses, están tan lejos que no los vemos. Aunque si lo hiciéramos, creo que la gente sería más consciente de lo que es la “basura espacial”. Lo que sí que pasa a veces es que los paneles solares de los satélites se alinean de vez en cuando de forma que reflejan la luz del sol hacia la Tierra. Cuando esto pasa se ve un punto brillante, que puede moverse rápido o estar quieto, dependiendo de la altura de la órbita del satélite, y puede durar más o menos, dependiendo de la velocidad de rotación del satélite.

¿Qué pasaría si de repente todos los satélites se estropearan a la vez? ¿Qué consecuencias tendría? No lo sé, pero muchas muchas. Y, ¿saben lo peor? es muy posible que ocurra en 2011-2012

¿Qué implica hacer una tesis doctoral?

Recuerdo que alguien me hizo esa pregunta hace tiempo. En esta entrada voy a intentar poner una pequeña lista (no completa ni exacta) de lo que implicó hacer mi tesis doctoral.

Para hacer mi tesis se emplearon, una vez hecha la carrera de física y de ser aceptado para hacer la tesis, del orden de:

-3 años y 3 meses como doctorando.
-100 días en el Observatorio del Teide (con un coste operativo de un millón de pesetas/día )
-4 meses escribiendo y corrigiendo a tiempo completo.
-40.000 euros para mi sueldo.
-2.000 euros en conferencias.
-2 ordenadores, y un clúster de 20 CPU de vez en cuando.
-1 Tera de espacio en disco, sin contar backups.
-más 3 meses de procesado continuo de datos en 20 CPUs de 3Ghz cada una.

La carpeta de la tesis en mi ordenador ocupa 850 megas, pero incluye copias de seguridad, datos, figuras y fotos. Sólo la charla de defensa de la tesis son 300 megas (tiene algunos vídeos).
El archivo del texto de la tesis está escrito con LaTeX, que es un sistema de procesado de textos particularmente bueno para dar formato a textos científicos. El archivo “thesis.tex” incluye muchos comandos que no salen en libro impreso, aún asi, las estadística muestra que se compone de:
-360174 caracteres en 62144 palabras, de 2 sílabas por palabra de media (es inglés, ellos no tienen palabras largas).
- 7599 frases, así que 8 palabras por frase, nada de frases largas. (ïndice de Flesch de 51).
-6800 líneas (10 palabras por línea). Si una persona lee una línea en 3 segundos, tardaría sólo 5 horas en leerla entera.

Buscando un poco más de juego con esto de las estadísticas, calculé el número de ocurrencias de cada palabra.
En Mac/Linux esto lo consigues con el comando:

tr -cs “[:alpha:]” “\n” < thesis.tex | sort | uniq -c | sort -rn

La palabras que más uso son the, of, and, in, to, … cosa normal teniendo en cuenta que está escrita en inglés. Seleccionando algunas palabras interesantes queda:

Por el otro extremo, es curioso mirar la unicidad de las palabras, o sea, cuántas palabras están sólo 1 vez, o cuántas están sólo 2 veces. Resulta que de las 62144 palabras, hay 1835 únicas, un 3%. Me puedo imaginar que ésta es una buena forma de mirar lo repetitiva que es una tesis.

Bruno astronauta

Esta es otra de esas historias que no pude comentar hasta ahora. Firmé un acuerdo de confidencialidad. No pude decir nada al público ni hablar de los detalles del proceso. Ahora que estoy fuera, si puedo. Aún así tampoco diré detalles de lo que pasó. Tal y como me dijo otro candidato a astronauta: “fue bonito mientras duró”.

¿Quién no ha querido ser astronauta de pequeño? Obviamente yo también. Y de hecho, al leer que la ESA ofertaba 4 plazas de astronauta, yo también solicité.
Para ello había que pasar una primera criba médica igual a la de piloto privado.
La pasé. Tengo el certificado médico para poder ser piloto privado, válido hasta 2011, creo.

Y conmigo 10.000 europeos también lo solicitaron.

De esos 8413 fueron solicitudes válidas y consideradas para el proceso. Yo estuve entre ellos, los 8413 posibles astronautas.

De esos habrían de seleccionar 923 mejores candidatos para hacer las pruebas psicotécnicas en Hamburgo. Yo estuve entre ellos, los 923 candidatos de esa fase.En la página web se pueden descargar algunos de los test tipo que hicimos. No daré detalles por cortesía a la ESA, pero sí decir que pagaron todos los gastos de traslado, hotel, comidas, … y en todos los casos de extrema calidad. Las pruebas en sí, aunque sólo fueron un día, fueron realmente agotadoras y duraron unas 11 horas. Incluían los test prueba y otros muchos más, que involucran conocimientos técnicos, preguntas psicológicas y habilidad para realizar muchas tareas al mismo tiempo bajo presión. Ese recuerdo lo guardaré con mucho cariño.

De esos, seleccionan ahora 200 para más pruebas, y de ésos 10 para pruebas médicas hipercompletas, de los cuales 4 obtienen la plaza. Desafortunadamente, yo no estoy entre los 200 de la siguiente fase. He escuchado decir que incluyen un análisis del genoma para estudiar la predisposición a ciertas enfermedades. No sé si es cierto, pero teniendo en cuenta mi parcial estimación del gasto de selección y formación, no me extraña.

Aquí se termina mi sueño de ser astronauta, pero al menos lo intenté. Sabia que era imposible, pero sólo ahora sé que estaba a un paso más cerca, en concreto sé que estoy entre los 976 mejores candidatos para astronauta de Europa, que no es poco.
Y también sé que esos 4 afortunados son unas auténticas máquinas. Ser los mejores en todas las pruebas no sólo depende de la motivación, formación y capacidad, sino también de tu fortuna en los genes (Gattaca?). Mis mayores respetos para ellos.

¿Cuantas peluquerías hay en Madrid?

Hay 3 noticias importantes en mi vida que me estoy dejando en el tintero, bien porque no son seguras, bien porque no puedo hablar de ellas todavía. Ésta es una de ellas.

Hace unos meses, cuando estaba terminando mi posdoc, me planteé que hacer después y estuve buscando alternativas. En realidad sólo intenté 3 cosas, las 3 que más me gustaban, con diferencia. Pero de campos muy diferentes, tan diferentes, como que uno de ellos era dejar la ciencia y entrar a trabajar a una consultora.

Lo hice, hablé con la mejor (o una de las mejores) consultoras de estrategia del mundo. McKinsey&Company. Resulta que me llamaron para una entrevista, halagado me sentí. Desafortunadamente coincidía con observaciones en Tenerife y les dije que no podía. Se pasó el periodo de entrevistas y, afortunadamente, encontré un puesto extremadamente interesante en ciencia. Aún así la consultora me volvió a llamar para una entrevista hace poco y me pagaban el viaje. Y lo hice.

Allí estuve en este fin de semana, en las entrevistas. Era la primera vez que hacía una “de verdad”, muy curioso. No diré los detalles, pero sí que el sitio es increíble, y la gente fue atenta y amable. Una de las preguntas fue “Calcúleme cuantas peluquerías hay en Madrid”. Gracioso, no?

Supongo que lo hacen para ver como piensas… este fue mi razonamiento:
Población en Madrid: 5 millones (me lo tuvieron que decir, no lo sabía)
Si hay 30% de mujeres que van a la peluquería 2 veces en 6 meses, 30% de hombres que van 1 vez cada 6 meses y 40% de estudiantes que van 1 vez cada 6 meses, eso da (papel y lápiz) 1 millón de citas en la peluquería cada mes. (Gente mayor y niños no los tuve en cuenta).
Si una peluquería media tiene 10 empleados y tardan 1,5 horas por mujer y 1 hora por hombre/estudiante), eso hace 2 mil citas al mes, eso hace ~500 citas al mes por peluquería.
Así que hay unas 2000.
Preguntado por refinar un poco más el cálculo, estimé que la eficiencia de una peluquería es menor porque la gente no va a ritmo constante durante el día, ni trabaja domingos. Si la eficiencia baja un 50%, el numero de peluquerías sería por tanto 4000.

Cuantas hay en realidad?: 3240.

Ta bien, no?

Oko Ball, o la bola que lava la ropa sólo con sal

Últimamente no paro de escuchar testimonios de gente que ha comprado una bola de plástico que lava la ropa sin detergente. Sólo hay que meter la bola con la ropa y poner una cucharada de sal donde el detergente. La ropa queda limpia sin usar detergente. Una vez a la semana la tienes que dejar al sol para “recargarla”. Y dura unos 1500 lavados.

De ser cierto es una pasada, además de ahorrar un montón de dinero en detergente, la ropa se desgasta menos al no usar detergentes y, además, es más ecológico.

Partiendo de la premisa de que funciona, intento explicármelo. Es posible que tenga alguna fuente de electricidad que disocie la Sal, produciendo iones de la Sal (Na y Cl), pero ¿cómo hacen para que no se disuelva normalmente en el agua? ¿Por qué los iones limpian? Al ponerla al Sol igual se carga… ¿cómo? el agua es buen conductor, ¿Cómo hace para no descargarse en un lavado? Muchas preguntas, demasiadas cosas que no cuadran.

Mi inopia en cuanto a detergentes se refiere es casi total, así que tras informarme un poco puedo resumir cómo funcionan:
Ropa sucia es ropa que huele mal y tiene manchas. Lo de oler mal es por alguna sustancia que se ha quedado en la ropa, así que en resumen lavar significa quitar sustancias de la ropa. Las hay de 2 tipos, las que se disuelven en agua y las que no. Así que el tema es hacer que todo se disuelva en agua para que se vaya con el aclarado. Y cuanto más fácil se disuelva, mejor.

Cómo hacen los detergentes para disolver lo no soluble? Básicamente usan unos compuestos químicos que tienen una parte hidrófila (que le gusta el agua) y otra hidrófoba (que no le gusta). Así, cuando encuentran una particulilla de grasa, la parte hidrófoba se pega a ella y la hidrófila se aleja, formando una burbujita (se llama micelo) con la grasa en medio. Esas burbujitas se van con el aclarado. No hay más que echar jabón o detergente a un vaso con aceite para verlo.

Además, si añades ingredientes que ayuden a esto, la limpieza es mejor. Algunos de los más usados son:

Los tensoactivos, que reducen la tensión superficial del agua. Esto básicamente hace que el agua “moje” mas y mejor. La tensión superficial del agua hace que una aguja de coser flote en el agua. Si le añades detergente, se hunde, porque el detergente disminuye la tensión superficial.

Modificadores del pH, que hacen que ciertas manchas se descompongan mejor. El pH es el que indica si algo el básico (como la sosa cáustica) o ácido.

Sustancias químicas abrasivas, que pueden degradar la ropa, pero la dejan más “brillante”.

“Ablandadores” del agua. La cantidad de calcio en el agua es lo que hace que sea blanda o dura. El agua dura disuelve peor el jabón, y de hecho hace que precipite (ese cerco amarillento de las bañeras). Además el calcio tiende a pegarse a las tuberías y calentadores del agua de la lavadora, acortando su vida (aquello del “Calgon”).

Oxidantes. El oxígeno, aunque sea vital para las personas, en realidad es extremadamente venenoso y activo. En el detergente, estos productos blanquean y desinfectan la ropa (por “quemarla” y matar las bacterias).

Enzimas. Las enzimas disuelven las proteínas, catalizan reacciones, así que ayudan a disolver ciertas manchas.

Bueno, y también pueden tener, aromas, blanqueadores, …

En resumen, siendo un detergente una cosa tan completa estudiada y compleja, esa bolita funciona mejor? Tras buscar un poco más en Internet encuentro una estupenda crítica. Estupenda porque sigue la lógica y usa el razonamiento crítico. Lo que viene a rebatir son las propiedades de la bola de marras (plástico, cerámica e imanes).

Según la bola que yo tengo a mano (la de la foto, pero hay otras), usa bolitas de cerámica, rayos infrarrojos lejanos y un campo magnético de 12000 Gauss.
1- Las bolitas de cerámica no me explico cómo han de funcionar. Según la crítica que comento, lo hacen al emitir rayos infrarrojos lejanos. Cierto es que la cerámica es muy buen conductor térmico, por eso las paredes de los hornos y cosas así se pueden hacer de cerámica, que no rompe. Y sobre los rayos…

2- Lo de los rayos infrarrojos lejanos es simplemente otro nombre de la palabra “calor”. Lo que el cuerpo humano detecta como calor no es mas que rayos infrarrojos. Todo aquello que tiene cierta temperatura emite esos rayos. Cuanto más caliente menos infrarrojos y mas visibles son (por ejemplo un hierro al rojo vivo ya emite en luz visible). La temperatura de la bolita en la lavadora es la del agua, ni mas ni menos, por equilibrio. Y la temperatura se la pones tu a la lavadora. Como dije antes cuanto más caliente mejor disuelves la mancha (pero si te pasas, se encoge la ropa!). Así que falso no es, pero no dice nada nuevo. Entre eso y no usar nada no hay diferencia.

3- Campos magnéticos. Éstos están por todas partes. Todo aparato eléctrico de casa los emite, pero son campos pequeñitos. Esos 12000 Gauss no es más que un imán pequeño normalito. De hecho el campo magnético disminuye mucho con la distancia, así que teniendo en cuenta el tamaño de la bola, el campo magnético de la bolita es pequeñísimo, y si no, poned una brújula al lado. ¿Ayudan los campos magnéticos al lavado? No lo sé, pero lo dudo, si lo hacen será muy localmente dentro de la bolita, y en todo caso, la lavadora ya genera un campo magnético en el motor de la misma.

Vamos que ya no me lo creo. Crédito 0. Aún así, leo un pequeño estudio que hicieron en ese artículo. Lavando con detergente, la bola y sin nada. Sorprendentemente los resultados son muy similares en los 3. Curioso. Puede ser que el detergente tampoco ayude tanto, o que haya quedado detergente de anteriores lavados (muy probable), pero el caso que nos ocupa era sobre la bolita. Aún cuando la lógica ya dice que no puede funcionar tan maravillosamente como dicen, resulta que no hay mucha diferencia respecto a lavar sin detergente. De hecho es bastante posible que la lavadora tenga residuos de detergente que afecten los primeros lavados. Lo que me hace gracia es que lavar sin nada da resultados parecidos. Supongo que la cosa sería hacer un test más completo. Lavar con una lavadora nueva no usada, o aclararla bien. Luego usar la bola y luego el detergente.

Pero yo me apeo aquí. Tengo más razones para dudar que para creer. Además he aprendido un montón sobre detergentes.

Ultimo día en la VTT

Hoy es mi último día en el Telescopio solar VTT (Telescopio de Torre al Vacío ) del Observatorio del Teide, en Tenerife.

Durante mi doctorado he venido una media de dos veces por año, unas dos semanas por vez. En total hacen unos 100 días.

100 amaneceres preciosos, 100 atardeceres impresionantes, 100 días viviendo a 2500 metros de altura… con unas vistas desde cualquier ventana impresionantes, yendo a correr por unos paisajes de ensueño, manejando unos de los mejores telescopios solares del mundo, siendo virtualmente único testigo en directo de los más pequeños detalles del Sol. Guardaré con cariño el recuerdo de estos días.

Doctor rerum naturalis

So, finally, almost 5 months after my dissertation, I have just ended all paperwork, bureaucracy, published the book of the thesis, … and just got it:

From now on, for the rest of my life, I hold the title of “Dr. rer. nat.” which stands for Doctor rerum naturalis ( Doctor of natural things).

I am so happy :D

PD: and now back to life. Like the t-shirt I got at my graduation party: “PhD, Looking for a job”

Defensa de la Tesis

Pues ya está, ya pasó: el viernes defendí la tesis. Fue muy cansado pero, en retrospectiva, no fue tan difícil... Claro, esto lo dice uno después de haberla defendido, no antes.

Pues como lo prometido es deuda, un post un poco largo contando la experiencia.. en orden cronológico:

T-1 dia. 13:00: Mis padres y mi hermana me llaman desde Madrid. Han perdido el vuelo y tienen otro asignado pero en unas horas… llegarán hacia las 12 de la noche, en vez de para cenar…

Cómo enviar información a 120.000 millones de km de distancia

Estamos en las cercanías de Saturno, el gran planeta con anillos. Tan cerca que su figura abarca la mayor parte de la vista. El Sol se ve lejano y pequeño, a esta distancia sólo llega una centésima parte de la luz que ilumina la Tierra. La nave madre Cassini acciona un mecanismo y suelta al espacio, de su lateral, un pequeño objeto del tamaño de una sombrilla grande: la sonda Huygens. Ambas naves vuelan paralelas alejándose poco a poco una de otra, en dirección a Titán. Cassini pasará de largo, mirando en todo momento a Huygens, mientras ésta cae entre las nubes de ese mundo, cuyo tamaño es la mitad del de la Tierra. Poco antes de llegar se inicia el ordenador de a bordo para ejecutar las órdenes de una delicada maniobra planificada 7 años atrás. Al principio la pequeña sonda viaja a 18.000 km/h, unas 10 veces más rápido que un avión «Concorde», así que la fricción con el aire de la atmósfera pone incandescente el escudo frontal que lleva y la va frenando. Tres minutos después, ahora que ya no hay llamas, despliega el primer paracaídas y empieza a estudiar el aire a su alrededor. Deja caer poco después el escudo que le protegía por delante para poder hacer fotos del descenso. A 120 kilómetros del suelo se extiende otro paracaídas más pequeño pero estable y sigue tomando fotos mientras espera el golpe con el suelo o el chapoteo en el mar de metano. Finalmente cae sobre algo parecido a la arena, en lo que se asemeja a una especie de orilla. Está rodeada de rocas de hielo sucio y fango de metano, a 180 grados bajo cero. Pocos minutos más de vida le quedan de las menos de tres horas de uso para el que fue creado. Arriba, hacia el anaranjado cielo titaniano, en el espacio, Cassini escucha todo lo que Huygens le manda, guardándolo en su disco duro. Una vez que han llegado los últimos datos, se gira hacia nuestro planeta y reenvía toda la información a la pequeña y lejana Tierra. Las ondas de radio, viajando a la velocidad de la luz (300 mil kilómetros cada segundo), tardarán 50 minutos en llegar. Después de servir de repetidor para la Huygens, Cassini sigue su rumbo para estudiar los alrededores de Saturno durante 4 años más. En el centro de control, tras soñar con ello durante años, las pantallas de los ordenadores se llenan de números, gráficas e imágenes de un mundo que está a 120 mil millones de kilómetros. Datos que harán las delicias de los científicos durante muchos años, que nos ayudarán a entender un poco más nuestro lugar en el universo en que vivimos y a imaginarlo más próximo y accesible.
